Race the Tube … in a wheelchair

We love this! Except … for one small caveat. Following on from Race the Tube the other week where someone ran between Mansion House and Cannon Street station and made the same train, Anthony in this video in his wheelchair attempts the same thing – the obvious thing being that the stairs make it not possible for him to make the train. Watch the video …

Except that is shows him unable to get down the stairs at Cannon Street station, for some reason avoiding the fact that he wouldn’t have been able to get out of Mansion House station in the first place where there are 24 steps up from the platform to ticket hall area, and then 24 steps again to get from the ticket hall to street level.

We know the point it’s making, but it could have been made sooner! And much more accurate if it had shown him not being able to even get out of the starting station in the first place …

Before all the stations, there was Zone 1

Jay Foreman’s all stations tube song is now somewhat legendary already, but yesterday we heard from a lovely chap, Joseph Moëd, who pointed us in the direction of a similar thing he’d done a year before, but featuring just the stations of Zone 1…

(Joseph has since moved to Toronto in Canada, where he’s made a similar video for their subway system there…)

Tube Dinner

Another video we stumbled just recently but from the past – a posh dinner party on board a tube train? Yeah … that’s been done as these people show from a few years back on board a Jubilee Line train.

A trip on the Underground

Way before Sherlock had a ‘tube montage’ in one of its episodes – there was this. A Trip on the Underground.

Created by Alex Thompson years before an episode of Sherlock featured something very similar, he describes it as ‘A trip on the underground that gets weirder and weirder, focusing on the graphics, design and movement often missed on the Tube. It’s seamlessly cut in rhythm with the music for compelling viewing you’ll want to see again and again. See the underground like never before.’

Secrets of the DLR

Station Master Geoff made a new production for Londonist, this time out on the DLR.

Update: We can’t believe no one’s noticed this yet, so we’re going to mention it. Look closely at the captions. Take the FIRST letter of every caption – write them down, and see what it spells out!

New choob

It’s been online for ages, but I don’t think we’ve ever embedded the video to it here on the Station Master blog, so in case you haven’t seen it – is this the future of tube travel?

When travelling in town, recite bad rhymes

Oh boy, just when we thought we’d seen them everywhere on in-carriage posters and larger variants on the platform, TfL now seem to have created animated variants of the same advertising campaign with the bad rhymes that don’t scan properly.   They’re also now appearing as ‘trailer’ adverts before some YouTube videos (that most people immediately click past after 5 seconds).

I personally still think it’s better to press the emergency alarm button WHILST the train is travelling between stations so that you alert the driver sooner – rather than later – that someone is ill on board your train.

A and C and S

A & C to S

A & C to S

A gratuitous plug for a DVD that you might like, created by Station Master Geoff who hopped on board with two drivers – one on the Met and on the the H&C/Circle Lines as they went through the transition phase of the new S-Stock trains coming in on their respective lines.

The DVD is two half an hour documentaries (one hour in total) from the cabs of trains, following the drivers around on their working day, with both the old and new types of trains. the ‘C-Stock’ video section too features a lot of disused/abandoned station stuff in the the middle of London too!

It’s available to order online now from the the LTM Website here, or grab a copy in person from the shop in Covent Garden as from next week!
