We recommend not trying to sit on this bench on the eastbound platform on the Central Line at Notting Hill Gate. Who broke this?! We have visions of a very, um .. large person sitting down on one end, and it giving way under their weight!

Five car Overground

Out of the fleet of 25 trains required to service the East London Line part of the Overground, the halfway point for the extended trains has been reached, as 13 units are now five cars in length.
Whitechapel, Wapping – and here at Rotherhithe though – are three stations on that line where the fifth carriage doesn’t fit, (you can just make it out in this picture here). The fifth car sits in the darkness of the tunnel, and Selective Door Opening makes sure that the doors in the last carriage don’t open into the tunnel.

D Derailment

A small hiccup in Ealing Common depot occurred earlier this week, when a 3-car unit (half a normal train) being moved about had a small issue and became derailed. It meant that no unit that would normally enter the depot from Ealing Common station could do so, and had to do so via Acton Town instead.
This Station Master was caught in that delay which is how we knew about it!

No ticket office at Queensway

The future is here … as the TfL effort to get staff out from behind ticket office windows and into the ticket office areas to talk to people instead has started to happen.
This was Queensway station on the Central Line earlier this week, one of the first stations where the ticket office has now closed, and staff are out on their feet instead.

A sign up on the windows of the old ticket office told us that “Work to install additional ticket machines and to upgrade one of the two lifts will continue until May. The station will remain open during this period. The ticket windows at this station will not reopen”.

There are more closures of ticket offices scheduled for later this year. We’ll be keeping watch on how many, if, and when new ticket machines get installed, and (sadly) updating our data to remove ‘Ticket office opening times’ from our database.
South Wimbledon station also closed its ticket office this week, and there are more closures to come throughout February. Most interestingly of all, we noticed that Shepherd’s Bush on the Central Line is one of those, and that it always has queues at the ticket office whenever we walk past …

Well, we say ‘map’ it’s a diagram of where the services now run, and how many trains per hour (tph) you can expect on that branch.
Note this is for off-peak and weekend services, during the peak hours – there are a few more trains on the network and they get extended and do go to a few more places, but this now gives you an idea of the new setup, including a new strange West Ham terminating train …

Station Master 1.9.2 update available

Version 1.9.2 of Station Master has now (finally!) been released and is available on the App Store.

It’s been a long time (7 months!) since version 1.9 was released back in July 2014, and this version has been a little while coming, but we are delighted that this update brings you the following features…
• Updated 3D station map and exit positions for the new Tottenham Court Road Northern Line station. (We’re the only App at present to have this information!)
• Amazon Locker and Supermarket Click-and-Collect service locations.
• Over 150 refreshed or new 3D maps, 326 in total, which includes all of the 270 Tube stations!
• Updates for iOS 8, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – looks great on your larger screen device. We’ll be working in future to take advantage of the increased screen real estate on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices too.
• Updates and corrections to the database. As always, thank you to everyone who sent, and continues to send, us information, corrections and updates.
• Minor stability and performance improvements. (This is the stuff that makes Matt happy, including one very obscure bug on the iPad! and some very odd layout issues on iPhone 4 and 5 devices when built for the latest versions of iOS!)

Ever wanted to have the handy exit information that Station Master provides, but… just wanted that? It’s something that people asked us for and so we created a companion App to Station Master.
It retains the the fancy carriage graphics that came out with the 1.8 version of Station Master. Download our App ‘Exit the Tube‘ which is JUST the exact carriage and door exit information for every Underground, Overground and DLR station in London.

Here’s the second App which we sell – a simple lookup for errors that you can get on a Barrier Gate when you touch in or out with your Oyster or Contactless Payment Card. When this happens, an error number flashes up on the gate, and if you make a note of that number, you can look it up using our App to see what it means.
e.g. the most common error number is ‘36‘ – which means you don’t have enough credit on your Pay-As-You-Go balance, but there any many others too! And we’ve got them all listed here in the App for you.
Oyster Errors is also available on the App Store. And we’ve got an update in the pipeline for it available very soon now, with the very latest codes and support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (and maybe even the iPad!).

At Kew Gardens last night, we spied the one evening service that was going to bed for the night (triangle sidings, or Ealing Common depot?). But we were amused to see that whilst the onboard DMI and audio announcement had the train going to HSK (High Street Kensington), the display on the platform had it going to a station we’d never heard of before … Kensington High Street.

West Brompton Extension

With five car trains arriving on the London Overground, many of the platforms have been extended. An oddity arising from this can be found at West Brompton, where due to the southbound Overground trains now stopping further forward than they used to, it has been possible to open up another space in the fence that is adjacent to the eastbound District Line platform.
This exit data has been added to Station Master and will be in the next release!
